The Sounds of Yazmeen's Daily Workout:

An audio expereience of my daily workout routine. From skipping to running and everything in between!

About the Sound

From skipping, to sit-ups and everything in-between. I will be taking you through an audio landscape of my daily workout running route, finishing off with the heartbeat of my routine. HIIT training.

​I ran 5km underneath the DVP in the centre of downtown Toronto. I then finished my run under the Bentway and went through a series of HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts. You will be hearing my skipping rope hit the ground, the soles of my feet bounce off the concrete and the slamming of the medicine ball.

 

The day that I recorded, my wonderful trainer was pushing me through the HIIT workout, you will occasionally hear him directing me in the background. Sometimes people bring their children to ride their bikes under the Bentway because it is a well-lit area with a smooth loop around that becomes a skating rink in the Winter. The voices of these children are very much present because they were stopping near my workout area due to the curiosity of what I was doing.

​I play soccer professionally for the Jamaican Women's National soccer team. I was preparing for a training camp in Europe at the end of November but unfortunately it was cancelled due to COVID-19. As a professional athlete it is important to always stay ready, even if you don't have a competition in the foreseeable future. I usually run the same route every day, mixing up the times that I go and turning at different corners and streets. The reason for my freestyle route is because I’ve watched way too many movies where someone runs the same route every day and gets kidnapped.

 

Even though I live in a fairly safe area, it’s still downtown Toronto and after I finish my school work I tend to only have time to work out at night. I live across the street from the Bentway, I like that my workout finishes across the street from my house because I am usually extremely sore and I can just go straight home for dinner! The Bentway consists of a large open space with decorative blocks, benches, rocks, etc. I utilize what I have around me for exercise since we can’t go to the gym due to Coronavirus.

My HIIT workout usually starts with me skipping for five minutes. I will then transition into using the blocks to do angled push up’s and mountain climbers. Following this I will do medicine ball slams and medicine ball plank jacks.
