Yazmeen Jamieson: Carleton University Student, Professional Soccer Player
I am a 22-year-old student-athlete who has been pursuing my honours undergraduate degree at Carleton University, I am now in my final semester majoring in Communications and Media Studies with a double minor in African Studies and Anthropology. Throughout my four years at Carleton I have played soccer internationally for the U20 Jamaican Women’s National soccer team, was promoted to the senior Women’s National team, participated in the Pan American Games and one Olympic qualifier. During this time I have been to over twelve countries between 2018-2020 alone travelling the world playing soccer for Jamaica. In October of 2018 I was also part of the squad that qualified for the Women’s World Cup in France being the first time in history that a female team from the Caribbean has qualified for this honourable tournament. Fast forwarding to 2019, I was selected to be part of the first World Cup squad to represent Jamaica and the Caribbean in France.
On a more personal note, I started playing the violin since the age of four eventually transitioning into playing other instruments such as the drums, trombone, cello and piano. I started to move my focus into sports when I realized that I had to choose a trade to master. Beyond sports, I definitely have a passion for advocacy and social justice. I have been nominated twice and received the 2015 and 2016 Toronto Police 13th Division award for Black History Month from Canadian Premier Kathleen Wynne for my leadership and public speaking in the Toronto community. I have also earned the 2017 GAT Diaspora Scholarship in respect to Grenada’s 43rd Independence celebration. Awarded by Prime Minister Keith Mitchel and Canadian Politician Celina Caesar Chavannes.

I am bilingual in English and French so I hope to use my French speaking in France next year as plans are being put in place for me to play professionally in Europe. Following my soccer career, I plan to complete my masters in communications or business and then work for the United Nations or in a field that revolves around social justice and human rights.
